How I Built a Flexible Career While Raising My Family – And How You Can Too
It all started when I had my first baby. I knew that I needed to find a job that would allow me to be present with him.
I didn’t want someone else to tell me about my son’s first steps, or the cute things he did (and he did a lot of cute things!). I wanted to be there for those moments.
And, I also knew that I needed to help my husband pay the bills and save for our family’s future.
I began asking myself how I could get there: how can I get a job that’s flexible enough so I have time and energy for my family? How can I work hours that don’t conflict with precious one-in-a-lifetime moments?
If this sounds familiar to you – I get it. I get the stress and pressure of needing to start a career while starting a family. I get the pressure of “I need a meaningful change and I need it now.”
For me, I found an opportunity in an ad in the Pennysaver for a bookkeeping course. Seriously! I’ll admit, I was skeptical – waiting for the MLM pitch to drop – but the scam never came. Instead, I learned the theory of how to do bookkeeping. I watched the tutorial videos as I nursed my baby and in the quiet moments when he was sleeping. I wasn’t sure exactly where this course would lead me, but I knew that I could learn from home at my own pace, and I was motivated to learn.
After completing the course, I landed an entry-level job where I quickly realized that understanding the concept is not enough to apply it to client books. However, I slowly filled in the gaps by learning from the CPA on-site.
I’ll be real: learning in-person was a slow process.
Looking back, if I had found a course that didn’t just teach theory but also gave me the practical QuickBooks skills, I would’ve been ready to take on client work much sooner… like, years sooner.
After the slow start, I got my very own first client right before my daughter was born! From this foundation, I’ve grown an entirely remote career that’s been a part of my life-work balance for 16+ years.
To this day, bookkeeping allows me to continue to be present with my family in ways that matter to me. I work from home, so, even when I’m “in the office,” I’m always close enough for hugs, shared meals, and helping with homework.
Does any of this resonate with you?
Are you looking for a job that allows you to be present for family moments while still earning an income?
Are you searching for something that offers the flexibility to work when you want to work?
Do you want something real—something that would challenge you and make a positive impact on clients’ lives?
I’ve been exactly where you are.
Bookkeeping is a career that lets you be there for the moments that matter. You can do this from home, be present for your family, and still make a living.
I know, because that’s what I did. I’m still doing it!
That being said, today’s job market is different than it was 16 years ago. Today, you don’t really have the luxury of only learning the theory – firms are hiring, but they want you to know the practical skills, too.
That’s why I’ve designed a bookkeeping-for-beginners course that’s specifically created to get you from “I don’t know anything about bookkeeping” to “I’m ready to get to work.”
Accounting Fundamentals will teach you not only the important concepts of bookkeeping, it also has real practice opportunities (in QuickBooks!) so that you can build up your confidence + competence.
You can learn at your own pace, so you get to decide when you’ll be ready to take on clients’ books at an entry-level.
You’ve got this. And, I’m here to help.
Why wait?
You deserve a career that works for you and your family.
